Since the earliest civilisations, the square has embodied the human impulse to impose order.

In ancient settlements, square and rectangular plans brought structure to space, while grid-based urban planning became an architectural expression of authority, continuity and collective order. In military formations, the square became a geometry of defence, resilience and discipline. From ancient armies to modern infantry, its strength lay in the principle of maximum resistance from without and cohesion from within—geometry shaped by strategic intelligence. On a philosophical and symbolic level, the square represents the material order of the world through the four directions, four elements and four fundamental axes.

In D’Evin’s interpretation, the square transcends geometry to become a symbol of strength, coherence and inner balance.
